Caring for Aging Arkansas

We all age. If we’re lucky, someone will be there with us, allowing us to do so in dignity and with as much independence as possible.

When a loved one becomes a senior, it’s our turn to care for them. Taking care of an elderly loved one in your home comes with many responsibilities, but when your family member is able to remain at home instead of in a long-term care facility, the benefits are just as numerous.

Aging with The 5A

The Arkansas Association of Area Agencies on Aging (5A) provides services and resources for the aging residents of Arkansas and their caretakers. One aspect of those services is to provide you with all the tools you need to successfully take on a caregiving role.

The Caring for Your Aging Loved One Checklist is just one of the many ways the 5A reaches out to caregivers. It includes resources to help you on your journey as well as self-care tips to keep you healthy, too.

Providing the Best Possible Care

Our checklist is a compilation of the practical information you need to provide your aging loved one with the best care possible. You’ll learn:

hug, self-care, yourself, heart, love, myself, care

What caregiving services for the elderly entails.

How to prepare yourself and your home for such an important role.

talking, friends, coversation, someone, listen, happy

To communicate effectively with your loved one and with their medical care team.

management, calendar, time, skills, self-care, job

To create a daily schedule that works for you and your elderly loved one.

To balance your own life while giving the best possible care to your loved one.

growth, love, heart, empathy, care, feeling

Self-care techniques to prevent “caregiver burnout.”

How to make everyday caregiving tasks simpler and more manageable.

self-care, comforting, heart, love, empathy, hands, giving

How to improve the quality of your life and your loved one’s life.

books, reading, learning, knowledge, hobby

How to take advantage of the resources at your disposal.

On top of this, you can find information on family caregiver support and the benefits that dedicated groups and programs offer for aging loved individuals and the people who care for them.

Being a caregiver can place a heavy toll on you, but it is also a rewarding path, enabling you to care for one of the most important people in your life in a safe, attentive way that simply isn’t possible from long term care facilities and allowing them to maintain a more independent life for longer.
